Fair question! Based on my conversations with students, they tend to be *very* curious about everything - including current events - but feel overwhelmed by the number of options out there.
So I don't think it's far-fetched that many of them use TikTok as a starting point, but I'm sure many of them don't go further than that.
I'd really like to know which news-flavored accounts they subscribe to and which ones they encounter via the algorithm. That would give a lot more insight into their news diet.
