I live in an area where the streets and any open spaces are lined by and full of trees. When I came here a quarter of a century ago those trees were home to all manner of birds. Yet on my morning walk today I was struck by how quiet it is. Sure, you hear the calls of big birds like Magpies and Woodpigeons. A larger body is better at regulating its temperature. But the smaller species like the dunnocks, finches and tits seem absent. It’s as though our native bird population is in rapid collapse.
