Oh that's not true. At least, not entirely. Psych studies are mostly crap, solely for the reason that people lie all the time and they lie about themselves even more often.
Female attraction towards men isn't solely based on looks, but on aptitude and skill. I would call this "usefulness in zombie apocalypse". For a given women, how you look matters a lot less than what you can provide. In that sense, showing girls pictures of men certainly gives skewed results because one can't judge aptitude given the picture alone.
Also, female perception of men differs A LOT within a month due to hormones. And then there are hormonal contraceptives, which are their own huge can of worms. My fren was dumped by his gf of 5 years because she started taking a different pill, her hormone levels changed, and she stopped finding him attractive.
