It's worth remembering that newspapers began as newsletters, delivered to subscribers through the postal system. There was a diverse range of them, each with their own angle and biases.
The idea of newspapers as a source of unbiased "journalism" only came in with capitalists investing in them. Allowing them to massively increase advertising, printing and circulation.
