I built a crystal radio out of junk around the house, just had to source a germanium diode, then I replaced the diode with a razorblade and graphite.
FM receivers are more complicated. Built one from a kit and still have no idea how they work. I mean, I get the theory, but I don't understand the circuitry well enough to design/source/build one from scratch.
