mastodon.social was made the default this year to make the start with Mastodon easier since “picking an instance” seemed to be too complicated for some ppl coming over from Twitter. This caused much uproar here since it increased the gap from mastodon.social to other instances quite a lot.
This linked post is from 2019, so I guess it is outdated. No biggie, was just wondering.
