There were interviews in the local paper and outraged speeches at school board meetings, and generally a concerted effort to get Miss Donaldson fired for exposing us tender little flowers to this "sordid trash," as they called it. She didn't end up getting fired, but "Grapes of Wrath" promptly vanished from the syllabus, presumably because of that final scene. In any event, going after the classics for being too racy for high-schoolers isn't a new thing and isn't restricted to Florida; this was in the liberal stronghold of Boulder, Colorado.
