My layout is designed based on the theory that modifier keys that get chorded should be reachable by one hand, and putting them on the home row, easily reached by the left hand, is probably for the best. The left-hand arrow block is there mostly because we already use WASD with the left hand, so it's not that big a leap, and it puts the letter keys central.
