I also renewed one of my software subscriptions that I use for work. It was only due to expire in January, but I got an offer I couldn't refuse (60% off the price of my annual renewal).
That was earlier this month, as part of "Black November", not specifically for Black Friday, but that's kinda exactly what the article is trying to say. Spreading out the sales for the whole month is better for both retailers and consumers....
