Used car prices dropped a ton and new car production stopped, which makes no sense whatsoever. Making money off this trade isn't exactly rocket science. I wasn't excited to start a car buying business, but CarMax made this exact same bet at around the same time and made a ton of money off of it, buying cars when dealerships were panic selling cars at nonsensical prices.
