OK, now I've got that out of my system, some context.
Corsets for infants were stiffened tubes, usually using cording (string sandwiched between two layers of fabric), which were intended to help the kiddo's torso grow properly. They were standard before medical science figured out that rickets was caused by a vitamin deficiency.
