Taxpayers who need help from the IRS this year are more or less screwed. From WaPo:
"The acting IRS commissioner, Doug O’Donnell, announced his plan to retire effective Feb. 28, just a few days after nearly 7,000 IRS employees were laid off, mainly in the tax enforcement and collections division. On Feb. 26, the IRS announced plans to close more than 110 offices with taxpayer assistance centers.
Meanwhile, U.S. DOGE Service software engineer Gavin Kliger sought access from the IRS to granular tax data on virtually every person, business and nonprofit in the country, leading the Treasury Department to block DOGE access to personal taxpayer data.
Then we get to Thursday and Friday, and significant developments unfold:
Feb. 27 — The Department of Homeland Security asks the IRS for help identifying the home addresses of 700,000 people officials suspect of being in the United States illegally. O’Donnell refuses that request.
Feb. 28 — O’Donnell officially retires at 5 p.m. His successor, Melanie Krause, considers complying with immigration enforcement officials’ request.
A new DOGE official, Sam Corcos, arrives at IRS headquarters and demands detailed taxpayer and vendor information. DOGE presses IRS lawyers to authorize an “omnibus” agreement that would allow federal agencies to cross-reference benefits rolls with taxpayer data to search for fraud.
The White House asks Congress to cut $20.2 billion from the IRS as part of legislation to avert a government shutdown (as scooped by CQ/Roll Call’s eagle-eyed appropriations reporter Aidan Quigley). I can confirm Aidan’s reporting, according to records I’ve obtained.
Put that all together, and what do you get? An unprecedented attack on the U.S. tax system in the middle of filing season, employees at all levels of the agency tell me."
