I read that when it came out and remember none of it but my favorite recent conspiracy (articulated if not also by Jesse Michels, American Alchemy) says something like string theory was invented as a distraction to get academics away from continuing to work on and publicize anti gravity science that was seeded by studying alien craft. I think he traces a UFO in the know type military guy who oversaw anti gravity type stuff and then interest abruptly stops as they get near cracking it. Simultaneously, his professor son pushes string theory across universities. May have some of that wrong but there’s a sense of that, and as of late there’s a huge pushback against string theory because more and more scientists think it’s essentially unfalsifiable and perhaps meaningless, not to mention a huge drain on tax payer money 😂
