If you pay attention, almost every church and private school was built in that era and they still stand. It could have been a simple confluence of "the reconstruction", the goldrush, no war, a massive influx of unskilled labor due to abolition, a complete lack of governmental intervention on monetary policy, and nothing to do with tariffs. How would you know?
