To be fair, there is a lot of rubbish books out there, and you're just as at risk of picking up a rubbish book as you are falling into a rubbish crowd online. The key to navigating it all is critical thinking. I got started down the critical thinking road because of English class where I was required to read Mark Twain and O. Henry to start out with.
Short stories...and they don't have the society's typical take on typical situations. Started reading more humorous authors in parallel with sci fi and actual science because I'd bumped into Isaac Asimov who wrote books on both. So it's not just the critical perspective I picked up, but the analytical as well...and DANG!! ADVENTURE!!! ...and so I picked up Bradbury, Aldus Huxley.
But what's cool about books is that no two journeys into adventure are the same. I'd say you're on the right track from which you can pick any fork to traverse and you'll do well.
