Having just arrived in Europe (as a resident rather than a visitor) I still see trains as very convenient. We took Eurostar to London recently and were very happy, and this is not the first time we've done it, just the first as residents. We're used to "arrive two hours early" for flights, so arriving an hour early for Eurostar doesn't seem that bad to us (yet).
But yes, it cost more than flying would have. :(
