There's this trend in the US of parents charging their kids rent the minute they turn 18 and then saving that money for a down payment on a house later.
And that is weird and disgusting for two reasons:
a) You are literally exploiting your kids. Landlords are exploitative.
b) You are controlling your kids and removing their agency. Instead of teaching them how to save money for what *they* want, you are imposing your will on them.
