I'm sure you're all over this, John, but I found the Wikipedia entry on source theory to be quite interesting. In particular, the application of the Green's function and Fourier Transform to solving the path integral seems related to some of the PDE problems I've become interested in.

It would be cool to understand how the source theory approach differs from the standard modern approaches to renormalisation and effective field theory. But that might take you too far afield (pun intended) from your goals here.
