A court eunuch (太監) appeared before the Master's school to place a Ban (禁令) upon it. He made a great show of having the local magistrate place the document upon the doors of the place, and decreed that the students were fearful and weak (脆弱) and would soon be cast down, as in the dark days of the First Emperor (始皇帝) of the Qin (秦朝).
But when he had finished his performance he walked away, and students continued to go in and out of the school as before, as though nothing had happened. The students were puzzled, and went to the Master to understand what had occurred.
The Master replied: "The court eunuchs occupy a different world (界) than our world (人間). When they make paeans to truth, they do not mean Truth. When they speak of virtues, they do not mean Virtue. Thus it is with their laws to: they mean nothing to us, because they are phantoms (幻象) of another world."
Zixia responded, "So then it does not violate Heaven (天) when we violate their false laws?"
The Master exclaimed, "Truly, you understand best what I have said! This eunuch, by accident, has revealed a great truth to you."
