Basalt Petroglyphs in Situ
Petroglyph National Monument, NM

You may be most familiar with southwestern rock art on sandstone panels. Many petroglyphs in New Mexico, however, are found on dark basalt from ancient volcanic eruptions. Pecking through the dark oxidation reveals a lighter buff color underneath.

Instead of showing the petroglyphs in isolation, I thought you might find the situation interesting. The rocks shown here have tumbled down from the edge of the lava flows above. The sandy ground has eroded away leaving the slopes under the rock sheet. The rocks range from football to refrigerator in size. Sandia Crest can be seen in the far background.

Look carefully and you can see many petroglyphs in the photo. Start looking in the center for a dancing human-shaped figure, or in the upper left.

Follow the link if you want to see close-ups of the petroglyphs.
