Kid2: violin. Started renting. Was excellent. Early in high school a dealer came to the district that had a wide variety of instruments. He tried a whole bunch quickly (I think he got to play a Strad for a minute), we bought one. He didn't play in college orchestra, though he use it in sime theater production. We'll see post-college.
