I mostly get my ideas from other people's stories. I think, "This doesn't make sense, but I can make it make sense," or "That's an opportunity missed!" or "That was ethically horrific, but I can fix it." Some might call that reactive, but the most influential literature in history is deeply reactive and derivative—Shakespeare, anyone?—so I'm okay with it.
