Those some people clearly have zero cognitive ability to comprehend how funding and grants work in academia. Ignore them, they are not worthy of academia's time anyways.
I've been doing academic research for about 11 years now, and I've got zero cents from public money apart from a very short-term (few months) EU grant. You can also argue of EU fundings are public money or not.
