In the sun, Meyer saw the ultimate origin of nearly all of our heat and mechanical power. The leaves of plants, he said, capture the sun’s rays and by their aid build up the woody fibers, by the subsequent burning of which we regain the heat that was absorbed, Men and animals, by eating the plants, utilize this bottled sunshine. In burning coal or other fossil fuel, we recover the sunshine of a past geologic age.
