Take a simplified model, where everybody posts and replies at the same rate, and people are twice as likely to reply to people of the same race.
If somebody're following 80% white people, and all replies are shown, then (unless I'm missing something, which is distinctly possible) 80% of the replies would be from white people. But the percentage of replies-to-people-you-follow from white people will be higher.
Of course it's a very simplified model ... but then again the most obvious additions are preferential following and boosting, both of which further magnify biases.
