I mean... The rat tactic was pretty damn good as long as raiders don't come in huge numbers and don't have explosives. Rats breed quickly and in large numbers and consume little food.
For what i saw, 8 rats can eat an entire corpse before it rots away, so they double as corpse disposal in early stages of the game. Later you want those corpses to make fuel and sell human skin
