I've been thinking about writing a proposal for a new MP3/FLAC/etc. tag called "scrobble-to". It would point to a URL, and media players could ping the URL to indicate that the song has been played.
I'm not sure if there are enough people using media players (instead of streaming) for it to be useful, but it's a fun concept for decentralized music distribution.
