Hubby and I finally made it to Point Possession today! This has been a trip we have wanted to make for a few years, but the only way to get there is by our Ranger and one must be cognizant of the tides. Anyway, we had issues with the ranger our first two tries, but today, we made it! It's 29 miles up the beach and it was a journey with a flat tire, but we got there and it was so beautiful. Point Possession got its name from Captain Cook who "discovered" Alaska although the Dena'ina people had been here for millennia. Not to get all colonial and stuff, but it signifies the day he "took possession" of Alaska...HA! Right across from Point Possession is Fire Island, which used to be the home to Indigenous folks until disease forced them to move across Turnagain Arm to Point Possession. Fire Island became a US Air Force Station for an air defense radar center and Nike surface-to-air missile site for NORAD in 1951, but during the 1964 earthquake that hit Anchorage, most of it went underwater and was closed in 1969.
