A vehicle from the fleet of the Eunápolis Penitentiary Complex, located in the southernmost part of Bahia, was attacked by criminals and hit by gunfire on Tuesday night (20). The driver of the car was shot and is being treated at Eunápolis Hospital in a critical condition. The Bahia Penitentiary Administration and Ressocialization Secretariat reported that the initial suspicion is that the attack was aimed at the prison director, who often used the vehicle. José Magno Alves, who took over the prison's management five months ago, was not in the car at the time of the attack. The injured driver is a third-party employee of the Reviver company, which is involved in the co-management of the prison unit. The Public Security Secretariat reported that the suspects are members of a criminal faction and have already been identified. Around 100 police officers were mobilized and have been conducting searches in the region since early Wednesday morning (21). The operation involved the Civil Police, Military Police, and Penitentiary Police, with the support of Federal Highway Police and FICCO (Bahia's Integrated Crime Fighting Force) teams. The teams are conducting searches in various points in Eunápolis and neighboring cities. The State Penitentiary Administration expressed regret over the incident and is monitoring the driver's health. The prison's security has been reinforced. The director, José Magno Alves, was appointed to the position in December 2024 amid a crisis at the Eunápolis Penitentiary Complex. Days earlier, 16 prisoners escaped from the prison after criminals invaded the facility and exchanged gunfire with prison agents. Among the fugitives was Ednaldo Pereira Souza, known as Dadá, who is believed to be the leader of the Primeiro Comando de Eunápolis faction. The former prison director was arrested in January on suspicion of having facilitated the criminals' actions.
