Hong Kongers in Taiwan firmly support ruling party

As Taiwan's presidential election approaches, immigrants from Hong Kong are supporting the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) due to Beijing's crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong. Most Hong Kongers in Taiwan support the DPP because of its firm stance on autonomy from Beijing. Taiwan has become a haven for free speech and liberties for Hong Kongers, leading to tens of thousands of immigrants moving to the island. However, some face challenges in obtaining residency due to Taiwan's concerns over security risks posed by China. From January 2020 to November 2023, over 37,100 Hong Kongers secured temporary residency in Taiwan, while 5,700 obtained permanent residency. Despite China's insistence on unification with Taiwan, many residents are undisturbed by the threat of war.
