In the US, anti-tax conservatives think roads descend from heaven provided for free by God, and hence tolls are the work of the devil.
While the only supporters of toll roads are lefty/greenie socialists (like me! guilty! 🙋♂️) who think charging fees for common goods is regressive but are willing to make an exception for tolls since *roads* are the work of the devil and we should all be riding on (purely hypothetical, no one has ever seen one) trains.
