When I arrived 2 months ago my feed was empty too and global feed was just too confusing and full of spam.
Here's what I did: found some cool people (like all these beautiful plebs who welcomed you in this note!) And followed everyone they were following. You can do this easily using the iris client, it has a "follow all" button. After you interact with these people you will inevitably gather a bunch of followers too!
It worked really well for me!
