Microsoft had accumulated such a big PC market monopoly in the 80s & 90s that in 1997 MS was nearly broken apart by the US govt. In an attempt to avoid investigation, MS invested nearly $150 million into a then-failing Apple Computer to give the US govt less ammo in a potential anti-trust case. This saved Apple from bankruptcy & helped them become 1 of the biggest tech companies in history. MS profited off of this investment in 2003 by selling their shares in Apple for nearly $600 million.
