I think a big part of what made this into such a kerfuffle is the amount of fear some people feel, and the implied amount of stigma, about moderation. Multiple people posting that they feel the CoC WG could end their careers. Possibly this is because of the CoC’s roots in quite serious, egregiously harmful behavior like SA at conferences? But a well-functioning CoC *should* sometimes sanction “good” folks in the community. It is not and should not be a career ender.
