I really liked them especially at that point in time in my life. They are slow, which I appreciated, and there is a real attempt to be broad in the types of people it talks about and the relationships which they have. It's still a bit old school in terms of that (like the newer scifi I read has a tendency to be more "gender is a spectrum" about gender stuff. These books have queer characters but not a ton of them iirc) but I liked the world biology/geology diversions a lot.
