First off, Facebook didn't kill XMPP, Google did.
Secondly, Google didn't either. The iPhone did.
People are walking around these parts acting like it's a mystery that an instant messaging protocol died shortly after the iPhone became popular and put simple polished text-messaging clients in everyone's pockets. Gotta be that darned Facebook.
