I think microtransactions could be a negative, economically, in the long run. It’ll be a fundamental shift in how people spend their money: less basics, like good food, clothes, social experiences. More “let me pay this rando site a few units of currency to store my profile picture to this random social network because I want to down with the down and in”. Nothing wrong with doing the latter. I just hope people use their faculties to make good decisions and realize they don’t need to top up their tokens to GPTChat—they need to have their friends over and cook dinner for them instead. Maybe I’m thinking a little too black mirror, tech dystopia here; but that’s what microtransactions prognosticate to me.
