In Japan, it’s really important not to waste any food. People will eat every grain of rice given to them. If you’re dining with others, everyone will pitch in when there’s something left on the table.
But I can’t stop thinking about how much bread is wasted because Japanese people don’t find the crust of bread appealing. Every konbini sandwich has the crust cut off. Millions sold every day. I want to understand why every grain of rice is critical to eat, but it’s okay to waste so much bread.
