I spent most of the morning at Fort Raleigh NHS. What impressed me the most was the presentation of information about the Freedmen's Colony on the island from 1862 - 1867.
Along the Freedom Trail (about 1 1/4 miles one way) are several interpretive signs with information about the settlement and the people who lived there. With each sign, is a silhouette symbolizing one of the stories being told. This is from the "Freedom to be Educated" part of the trail. 1/2
