CW: talk of school shootings
My son and I had what I guess is now a rite of passage for Americans. He texted his dad and me “I love you” at 8:30 in the morning and when I replied he said “we’re in a lockdown and they didn’t say it’s a drill and it’s been twenty minutes.”
I’m including myself because while the high school was locked down, the elementary school where I work, a block from him, was not locked down.
The head teacher in my room said “you can leave and go to the high school if you need to” and I asked: “for what? What could I do??”
Instead I went to the principal’s office and sat with the other teachers who had kids at the high school. We read the news and the texts that our kids were sending us.
Thank fuck it was part of a swatting hoax that was all over my area and that there were no injuries. I’m so grateful that my husband was able to walk to near the school and sit for two hours until the school was cleared by the cops and my son was allowed to leave and go home.
The other teachers and I sat together for a bit and then went back to our classrooms when we were pretty sure it was a hoax. What else was there to do?
We in this country are held hostage every fucking day to extremists who are perfectly happy to let our kids die so they can own as many guns as they want. It’s sickening and it’s wrong. We were lucky today. And there was probably a school shooting today where people were hurt or died. And if there wasn’t today, then there will be tomorrow.
