Honesty. Being nice is a manipulation tactic. It's not necessarily malicious and people may not know that's what they're doing, but it is. You can't be honest and nice, but you can be kind and honest. In fact, kindness requires honesty in my mind.
Being honest also doesn't mean being an asshole sometimes. Not everything needs to be said, and hard topics can be approached honestly and gently, with practice.
