The problem of large messages already exists today without files, just put absurdly large text in the message. It's a problem relays currently have and need to be prepared for. Clients should now only send messages supported by the relay.
Relying on external URLs greatly limits decentralization and censorship protection. Not to mention that currently social networks are more visual than text.
