The economic nodes are what determines consensus. Always has been, so the market for which network had the larger network was always the one to win out. Liquidity is the entire point of cash- like things. More individuals accepting the thing and using the thing will be always the one that determines consensus.
That being said there were more working for btc than working for bch back then. Even tho most of the " btc businesses" were in favor of the fork for the sake of " business interests. I believe it was only a posturing and mirage game in order to give the appearance of support when it wasnt actually the case.
I cant help but factor in the fact that bitmain had a hand in FUDin the segwit upgrade as nullified thier ASIC boost and they wanted to keep the monopoly on said advantage. So maybe the split wasn't intentional but just collateral damage from the attempts to make " their upgrade" the one everyone went with.
