Sure, I think I've used this analogy like four times in the last 8 hours:

Imagine you have a neighborhood. The neighborhood is the federated network. Each home on the street is its own instance (poa.st , nicecrew.digital, detroitriotcity, FSE). Each house has its own rules on what's allowed in the house, they look different, have similar but different features, as each has its own community and purpose. You can call your neighbor at poa.st a nigger from the NCD house, and your neighbor can call you a nigger from the poa.st house. Some houses are full of fags and put up fences so they can't hear what we say (this is defederation). It's all one big network. We're all just yelling at each other from across the street, but it's one big happy neighborhood, kind of.
