Because at the end of it you have a cool thing you can use to make your life easier.

For example here are a few projects I've done just for the heck of it:
- A program which uses a transcription AI to transcribe all the media files in a folder into text with timestamps so I can easily search them for keywords
- A script which automatically parses my TF2 backpack and checks the values of certain items I could craft and reports back the most valuable recipes.
- A script that downloads market data for a certain commodity in a video game I used to play that allows me to find the best selling location for that commodity near a good source for it.
- A mod for a videogame that automatically generates terrain on a map, allowing you to generate a large area with one set of modifications and then run the game with a different set of modifications that don't support the original terrain generation.

All of these were things that were fun for me to make and provided me with a tangible use that saved me time/effort or allowed me to do things I couldn't otherwise do. They also provided me with learning opportunities and the chance to hone my skill. I've done a lot more than just what I listed, but if I detailed too much it might allow people to connect me to other online identities or dox me so I have to be reserved.
