So, why oh why are so many buildings gone from before 1650? Because they stored gunpowder in the city. A lot of gun powder. When it went off, it destroyed over 500 houses and blew out practically all windows -- including that of the old and new churches. Learning from their mistakes, the new storage was placed well outside the city walls. The new storage still stands, 400 years later, although it presumable no longer stores gun powder.
