Fastmail's phone app unfortunately doesn't work offline, which is a bummer.
Fortunately, I've found satisfaction on my Android phone using Mozilla's K-9 app for email and DAVx⁵ + Simple Calendar Pro for calendar. Takes a couple extra steps (esp for calendar) but - besides enabling offline access - these open-source apps have very clean and nice UIs (actually better than Fastmail's phone UI IMHO) and I'm very happy with them.
