#Lectionary post: Born again

English lacks a singular second person pronoun. This was not always the case. Once we had a similar structure to French with "you" doing double duty as a plural to address groups of people and a formal mode of address. The pronoun for individuals without a requirement for formality was "thou". The English, being notoriously formal and stuffy, gradually dropped "thou" in favor of addressing everyone formally.
