I reckon sometimes conspiratorial thinking actually lessens your ability to accurately analyze covert political action. Say the CIA is revealed to have given a bunch of under-the-table money to an anti-communist media company. The conspiratorial instinct is to say "the CIA was secretly running the media company from the shadows." This ignores a much more likely method: The CIA saw a media company making content aligned with the CIA's goals, and gave them a bunch of money so that they'd keep doing what they're already doing. Actually running the company themselves would be a massive and pointless logistical headache, and way more involved than a covert operation is supposed to be. Totally extraneous effort for no extra benefit, yknow?
