Oxford professor of 40 years, Sir Jonathon Bate says students can't read long books anymore.
Says its because of 6 minute videos on YouTube and TikTok, along with the state school syllabus choosing short books like Of Mice and Men.
He claims that it used to be that students would read 3 novels a week, now they struggle to read a novel in 3 weeks.
He says " an unintended consequence of the push in both the elite Bristish and American universities towards diversity and access ... because, ofcourse, those students come from disadvantaged schools where the teachers' main task is crowd control, and so the demands in terms of reading long books are just not there"
THIS IS BY DESIGN. THOSE WITH A SHORTER ATTENTION SPAN ARE EASIER TO CONTROL.
READ MORE NOVELS. OFTEN.
